Questions
Straight answers.
No jargon and no runaround. Starting with the one that surprises almost everyone: in Connecticut, you do not need a doctor's referral to start physical therapy.

Most people who call us have been putting this off for a while.
Not out of laziness. Out of being the person who looks after everybody else first.
So they arrive with questions they feel a little silly asking. None of them are silly, and we hear all of them every week.
Below are the answers we give on the phone. The most common seven are in the list further down this page.
Connecticut Direct Access: you do not need a referral
This is the answer that saves people the most time, so we will lead with it.
Connecticut has what is called direct access. You may be seen by a licensed physical therapist without a doctor's referral first.
In plain terms: you can call us today and be evaluated. You do not have to wait weeks for a doctor's appointment just to be told to go to physical therapy.
Your insurance plan is a separate question from state law. Some plans still ask for a referral or an authorization before they will pay.
That is exactly why we check your benefits for you, free, before your first visit. We find out what your plan needs and tell you.
If it turns out you do need a referral, we say so early and help you get it moving.
And if we see something during your evaluation that belongs with a physician, we tell you that too. Direct access does not mean we work alone.
What actually happens at a first visit?
We listen first. What hurts, when it started, and what it is stopping you doing.
Then comes a cause-first evaluation. We look for the reason the pain is there, not just the spot that hurts.
You spend that time one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist. You are never doubled up with another patient.
You leave knowing what is going on, what we would do about it, and roughly how long it should take. A plan with an endpoint.
What should I bring, and what should I wear?
Photo ID, your insurance card, and any imaging reports you already have. Wear clothes you can move in.
The full list, plus what to expect before you arrive, is on our patient forms page.
Can I choose where I go for physical therapy?
Yes. If someone handed you a name, you are still allowed to ask us to look at your plan.
Call us and we will check your benefits and tell you honestly what we find.
How soon can I be seen?
Ask us for the next opening. We will not promise you a day on a web page, because that would be a guess.
What we will do is work to find you a time. Call and we will tell you exactly what is open.
I am arranging this for my mother. Can I call on her behalf?
Yes, and plenty of people do. You are not being pushy. You are the one who noticed.
Call us, tell us what you are seeing at home, and we will talk you through the options.
She is welcome to bring you into the evaluation with her. Two sets of ears is often better than one.
Do you treat what I have?
Probably. Balance, Parkinson's, stroke recovery, back and neck pain, joints, sprains, and recovery after surgery.
See the full list on what we treat, or the ways we treat it under services.
If it is not on the list, call anyway. We will tell you straight if you would be better served elsewhere.

Questions, Answered
Everything you’re wondering before you book.
Straight answers: no medical jargon, no runaround.
No. Connecticut has Direct Access, so you can see a physical therapist without a doctor referral. If your insurance plan wants a physician note, we chase that paperwork down so it never holds up your care.
We run a free benefits check before your first visit, so you know your share of the cost before you walk in, not three weeks later in the mail. No insurance, or you would rather not use it? Ask about self pay when you call.
Honestly, nobody can hand you a number before they have watched you move. What we can hand you is a plan with an endpoint. After your evaluation you will know your four phases, Pain, Prime, Perform and Prevent, what each one has to accomplish, and what you have to hit before moving up.
Making you hurt is not the plan. The first phase is called Pain because calming it down is the first job, and hands-on treatment starts on visit one. We work at a level you can handle, you tell us when it is too much, and nothing gets done to you without being explained first.
Yes, when it is dosed for the body in front of us. A large part of our work is with older adults, people recovering from a stroke, and people living with Parkinson’s. Our team includes LSVT BIG and PWR!Moves certified therapists. You start where you are today, and you move up only as you earn it.
The same therapist, one-on-one, every visit. You are never doubled up with another patient, and you are never parked on a machine while your therapist works with somebody else. The whole hour is yours.
Fair question, and usually it was the model, not you. Plenty of clinics rotate you between aides and hand everyone the same printed sheet. Here you get one-on-one time with a licensed physical therapist every visit, a cause-first evaluation instead of a protocol, and a plan with an endpoint, so you always know why you are doing something and when you are finished.
