Weeks 1–2
Pain
Take the edge off.
Hands-on work settles the irritated nerve and the muscle guarding around it. That starts on your first visit, not weeks in.
What We Treat
You have been working around it for a while now. The careful bend at the sink. The chair you only sit on the edge of. One cause-first evaluation with a licensed physical therapist is where that stops.
Sound Familiar?
You are the one everybody calls when they need a hand. Which is exactly why your own back has waited this long.
Why It Happens
A back rarely hurts for one clean reason. It is usually a few things stacked on each other. A disc that is irritated and leaning on the sciatic nerve, which is what sends pain down the leg. Spinal joints that stiffened up and stopped taking their share of the load. Deep support muscles that went quiet after the last flare and never switched back on. And the daily pattern, how you sit, bend, and lift, that reloads the sore spot before it can settle.
None of that is visible from across the room. It takes a cause-first evaluation to find which one is driving yours. That is why rest, ice, and a printed sheet of stretches keep coming up short. They answer the symptom and leave the cause alone. Here the whole hour is yours, one on one with a licensed physical therapist. You are never doubled up with another patient.
The Honest Truth
A back rarely gets worse loudly. It gets worse quietly, one avoided movement at a time.
How We Fix It
Every plan has an endpoint. Here is what the four phases look like for a low back.
Weeks 1–2
Pain
Hands-on work settles the irritated nerve and the muscle guarding around it. That starts on your first visit, not weeks in.
Weeks 2–6
Prime
We free up the stiff segments that have been guarding the sore spot, so your back starts sharing the load again.
Weeks 6–10
Perform
Core and hip strengthening, added a step at a time, until bending and lifting stop feeling like a gamble.
Weeks 10+
Prevent
Lifting, twisting, and stairs get tested under real load with your therapist watching. That is the endpoint, not another appointment.

Questions, Answered
No. Connecticut has Direct Access, which means you can see a physical therapist without a referral from a doctor. You can call us and book the evaluation yourself. If your particular plan wants a referral on file, we will tell you that up front and help you sort it out. Getting started does not have to wait on anyone else.
Usually it is not the first step. Plenty of people with no back pain at all have disc bulges and wear and tear on their scans, so an image on its own does not always name the cause. We start with a hands-on evaluation of how your back moves and what reproduces your symptoms. If imaging turns out to be genuinely necessary, we will say so and help you get it.
In most cases movement helps more than rest does. Hurting is not the same as harming, and full rest tends to leave a back stiffer and weaker than it started. The trick is the right movement, in the right dose, for your back. That is what a licensed physical therapist works out at your evaluation, then builds on as you improve.
We will not guess at a number before we have seen your back. What you get instead is a plan with an endpoint. After the evaluation you will know which of the four phases you are starting in, what has to happen to reach the next one, and what is left after that. If you get there sooner than expected, we say so and we finish.
A licensed physical therapist, one on one, every visit. You are never doubled up with another patient, and you are not parked on a machine while your therapist starts somebody else. The whole hour is yours. It is the first thing most people notice about us.
We will not quote a number before we know what your plan covers. Ask us for a free benefits check and we will look yours up and tell you plainly what to expect. You hear the real numbers before your first visit, not on a bill afterwards. If we are not the right fit for you, we will say that too.
