What We Treat

Chronic pain treatment in Milford.

You have been told it is age. That it is normal. That there is nothing left to do about it. A cause-first evaluation with a licensed physical therapist starts somewhere else, with what is still changeable.

Sound Familiar?

Does this sound like you?

  • Telling the whole story again to someone new, and hearing that your scans look fine
  • Rationing the good days, because you know what tomorrow will charge you
  • Cancelling late, then apologizing for something that was never your fault
  • Lying awake doing the arithmetic on how many hours of sleep are left
  • Being told to rest, then told to exercise, and getting nowhere with either
  • Pain that moved in months ago and started making your decisions for you

None of that means it is in your head. It means nobody has looked at the whole picture yet. That is where we start.

Why It Happens

Pain that lasts is not pain you imagined.

Pain is an alarm system. When the alarm runs for months, the system itself gets more sensitive. The volume creeps up, and ordinary movements start setting it off. That is a real, physical change in how your body handles signals. It is not weakness, and it is not something you invented.

Underneath it there is almost always something mechanical too. A joint that stopped moving. Muscles that got weaker after months of guarding. A way of moving you adopted to cope, which now costs you. A cause-first evaluation looks at both halves, the sensitive alarm and the mechanics feeding it. That is why the answer is rarely rest alone, and rarely one more scan.

The Honest Truth

The longer it runs the house, the more it takes.

If you keep waiting

  • The list of things you have quietly stopped doing keeps getting longer
  • Months of guarding leave the muscles weaker, so ordinary days cost more
  • Sleep, mood and patience end up paying the bill alongside the pain

If you start this week

  • Somebody finally gives your whole history the time it needs
  • You leave visit one with an explanation that fits what you actually feel
  • You get a plan with an endpoint, and one therapist who knows your story

You have already been patient. That was never the problem.

How We Fix It

Four phases. Paced to what your body will accept.

Every plan has an endpoint. Here is what the four phases look like when pain has been around a long time.

Phase one

Pain

Turn the volume down.

Hands-on work and carefully dosed movement settle the system. You set the pace with your therapist, out loud, every visit.

Phase two

Prime

Get the movement back.

Stiff joints and guarded muscles get their range back gradually, in doses small enough not to provoke a flare.

Phase three

Perform

Rebuild what guarding cost you.

Strength returns in steps you can actually tolerate, so your body relearns that load is safe rather than threatening.

Phase four

Prevent

Keep the ground you gained.

You learn to read your own early warnings and handle a flare without losing weeks to it. That is the endpoint.

This is the third PT that I have been to, and not to disparage the others, this is far superior to what I’ve experienced. You are treated as an individual. The therapist is not juggling three patients simultaneously. It’s an individual-based PT program. I am extremely happy that I discovered Joanne and You Therapy.

Questions, Answered

What people ask before booking for chronic pain.

No. Connecticut has Direct Access, which means you can see a physical therapist without a referral from a doctor. You can call us and be evaluated without waiting on an appointment with anyone else first. Some insurance plans still ask for a referral for coverage reasons, so we check that for you as part of your free benefits check, before your first visit.

Yes, and being told nothing is wrong is one of the most common things we hear. A clear scan means no red flags, which is genuinely good news. It does not mean your pain is imagined, and it does not explain what is driving it. We look at how you move, what has weakened, and how sensitive the system has become. That is a different question than the one an image answers.

That fear is reasonable, and you get a say in the pace from the first visit onward. We start well under what your body will accept and build from there. If something flares, we adjust rather than push you through it. Because one therapist stays with you the whole way, you never have to re-explain what sets you off.

Yes. One therapist, one patient, every visit. You are never doubled up with another patient, and you are not handed to an aide halfway through your session. The whole hour is yours, with the same licensed physical therapist who did your evaluation and already knows your history. For a long story like yours, that matters more than anything else on this page.

We will not invent a number before we have met you, and you have probably heard enough promises already. What you get is a plan with an endpoint. At your evaluation your therapist maps the four phases, Pain, Prime, Perform and Prevent, and tells you what has to be true to move from one to the next. You will always know which phase you are in and what is left.

We would rather show you than guess, especially if you have already spent money looking for answers. We run a free benefits check for you. You give us your insurance details, we find out what your plan actually covers for physical therapy, and we come back to you with real numbers before you commit to anything.
