We warm the area and find the restriction.
Old scar tissue and thickened muscle do not stretch out on their own. A smooth steel edge finds those layers and frees them. Then we load the area so it holds.
What It Is
You know the exact spot. It moved fine once. Now it catches, feels thick under the skin, and never quite loosens no matter how long you hold a stretch.
You have worked around it, because working around things is what you do. Good habit. Wrong problem for it.
IASTM means instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization. A licensed physical therapist runs a smooth steel tool along the muscle and tendon, feeling for tissue that has stopped gliding. The edge picks up gritty, ropey areas faster than fingertips can, and working over them brings blood flow back.
It is a tool, not a cure. IASTM opens a window where the area moves better than it did. What we do in that window, the hands-on work and the loading, is what makes the change hold. Tissue that has been stuck for a year does not un-stick on its own.

What It Helps
Best on tissue that has thickened, scarred, or stayed irritated long after the injury.
What A Session Looks Like
1
We warm the area and find the restriction.
2
The tool works it. You set the limit.
3
Then you move it, so the change holds.
Why It Works
Motion back in a spot that had stopped giving.
Tightness that stretching alone never touched.
Exercise that finally feels worth doing.

Questions, Answered
It is firm, and over a tender spot you will feel it. Most people describe a deep, scratchy pressure rather than pain. You tell us when it is enough and we ease off, every time. Nothing happens to you here without you knowing what is coming.
That redness is blood flow arriving, and it is expected. Some people get faint bruise-like marks for a day or two. We adjust pressure to keep that mild, and we warn you before we start if your skin tends to mark easily.
No, and we will not pretend otherwise. IASTM frees up restricted tissue, but freed tissue stiffens right back if nothing loads it. So it is always part of a wider one-on-one plan here, never the whole visit and never the whole answer.
No. Connecticut has Direct Access, which means you can see a physical therapist without a doctor sending you. Call and book. If we find something that belongs with your physician instead, we will say so plainly and help you get there.
We will not invent a number before we have looked at you. After the cause-first evaluation you get a plan with an endpoint, built on the four phases: Pain, Prime, Perform, Prevent. You always know which one you are in. If you stop progressing, we change the plan.
That depends on your plan, and guessing helps nobody. We run a free benefits check before you start, so you know what you owe before you owe it. Questions first? Call us at (475) 209-1606.
