Brynn Q. Lafferty, Occupational Therapist at Youtherapy Wellness and Physical Rehab

Staying in your own home

Most people do not want a smaller life. They want the same one, with the risk taken out of it.

Brynn is an occupational therapist. She has been treating patients since 2014, and her focus is aging in place: keeping you in your house, on your stairs, in your own shower, safely.

She is a Connecticut native, and she is also a Certified Health Coach, so the conversation tends to go past the exercises and into how the week is actually going.

Fall prevention, and what your house is doing to you

A fall is rarely one thing. It is usually strength, plus balance, plus a rug, plus a light switch that is in the wrong place.

So Brynn works both sides of it. She trains the body, and she assesses the home. Home modification assessments are exactly what they sound like: a clear look at the rooms you move through every day, and what to change first.

If you are reading this for a parent

You noticed the handrail grip getting tighter. You noticed the pause at the top of the stairs. You have not said anything yet because you do not want to make them feel old.

Bring them in for an evaluation. That is a much easier conversation than the one after a fall.
