What We Treat

Parkinson's disease treatment in Milford.

The steps that got shorter without you deciding to shorten them. The handwriting that closed up. Parkinson’s responds to movement done big and done often, and our therapists are certified to coach exactly that.

LSVT BIG PWR!Moves Freezing Talk to a Specialist

Sound Familiar?

Does this sound like your mornings?

  • Steps that got shorter without you ever deciding to shorten them
  • Feet that stick to the floor in a doorway, right when you need them
  • Your handwriting getting smaller as it goes down the page
  • Being asked to speak up, because your voice went quiet on you
  • Turning around in your own kitchen has become a careful three-point job
  • Buttons, jars and cutlery taking twice the time they used to

Two or more? Keep reading.

Why It Happens

Parkinson’s makes movement smaller. Training makes it bigger.

Parkinson’s affects the cells that make dopamine, the chemical your brain uses to size and start a movement. The instruction still goes out. It just goes out too small. That is why the steps shrink, the arm stops swinging, and the handwriting closes up, without you ever choosing any of it.

Here is the part that matters. Your brain has stopped judging movement accurately, so normal effort now produces a smaller result than it used to. Training that deliberately overshoots, big and repeated and high effort, teaches it to judge again. That is the whole idea behind LSVT BIG and PWR!Moves, and it is why a generic stretching sheet does not do the same job. You spent decades keeping everyone else on schedule. This is the appointment that is finally for you.

The Honest Truth

Parkinson’s rewards the people who start early.

If you keep waiting

  • Movement gets smaller by degrees, and small movement teaches the brain to expect small
  • Short steps and freezing in doorways put you at genuine risk of a fall
  • Strength and confidence slip together, and independence tends to go with them

If you start this week

  • Big, specific movement goes to work on the size of your steps and your reach
  • Balance and freezing get worked on directly, by someone certified to do it
  • You get a plan with an endpoint, plus a home program you can actually keep up

You did not choose the diagnosis. You do get a say in what it costs you.

How We Fix It

The same four phases. Built for Parkinson’s.

Joanne Lariza and Kristine Berg are LSVT BIG certified. Rey Abadilla is certified in PWR!Moves. One therapist, one patient, every visit.

From visit one

Pain

Loosen what is stiff.

Rigidity, a sore shoulder, a locked-up neck. Hands-on work makes bigger movement possible before we ask you for it.

Early on

Prime

Go big on purpose.

LSVT BIG and PWR!Moves retrain the size of your movement, so a normal step stops feeling like too much.

As you build

Perform

Take it into your day.

Turning, standing up, getting through a doorway without freezing. Rey Abadilla also runs a group Tai Chi class built around balance and mobility.

Keeping it

Prevent

Keep it, and keep going.

A home program you can hold on to, and a plan for what to do when things shift. That is the endpoint, not just another appointment.

I’m a newly diagnosed Parkinson’s patient and have found excellent results from just a few weeks of physical therapy. Rey and Joanne do a great job of making me feel comfortable. I follow up with exercises at home because of detailed instructions and guidance from both physical therapists. I encourage anyone to explore Youtherapy’s Parkinson’s specialized program.

Questions, Answered

What people ask before booking for Parkinson’s.

In Connecticut, no. Direct Access means you can see a licensed physical therapist without a doctor’s referral, so you can book straight in. We are glad to keep your neurologist in the loop. If you are calling for a parent or a spouse, you can book on their behalf and come along with them.

They are two exercise programs built specifically for Parkinson’s. Both train big, deliberate, high effort movement to push back against the shrinking the condition causes. LSVT BIG runs as an intensive block with a defined end. PWR!Moves is more flexible and folds into ongoing sessions. Joanne Lariza and Kristine Berg are LSVT BIG certified, and Rey Abadilla is certified in PWR!Moves.

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Nothing we do changes the diagnosis. What the right exercise can do is well established: better balance, bigger steps, more strength, and a slower loss of function. The goal is keeping you in charge of your own day for as long as possible.

It is the best time. Early is when you have the most function to protect, and the habits you build now are the ones that stay with you. You do not have to wait until things get hard before this is worth doing.

Parkinson’s is a long game, so a fixed number would be dishonest. An LSVT BIG block has a set structure and a finish line. Beyond that, some people come back for a maintenance stretch once or twice a year. Either way you get a plan with an endpoint, and you will always know which phase you are in.

We run a free benefits check before you commit to anything, so you know your out of pocket in advance rather than after. No guessing, and no bill you did not see coming. Ask us for the next opening and we will find you a time.
